Weeds or green manure

This is part of my regular documenting, assimilation & sharing of my digital harvesting. Weeds or green manure is a question about if I’m cultivating too many tabs open in my browsers… as a nature lover and gardener the idea of green manure really speaks to me. Green manure are plants that are grown and forked into the soil to enrich it. Weeds on the other hand are just plants in the wrong place! There are no weeds in wild spaces. Weeds tend to produce a lot of seeds and are excellent at dispersing them.

EU Biodiversity strategy for 2030

The economic and social costs of inaction include

  • biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse, two of the biggest threats facing humanity in the next decade
  • economic and social costs. The world already lost an estimated €3.5-18.5 trillion per year in ecosystem services from 1997 to 2011, and an estimated €5.5-10.5 trillion per year from land degradation. Biodiversity underpins EU and global food security.  Biodiversity loss risks puts our food systems and nutrition at risk
  • reduced crop yields and fish catches, increased economic losses from flooding and other disasters, and the loss of potential new sources of medicine
  • more than 75% of global food crop types rely on animal pollination
  • on average, global mean crop yields of rice, maize and wheat are projected to decrease between 3% and 10% per degree of warming above historical levels.

Forum for the future

2018 global mapping of the circular economy thanks to Deirdre Lane for sharing this resource with me. One of the insight from this study was ‘what is circularity and what is not‘ 3 years on the Ellen MacArthur Foundation has Measuring Circularity tools and courses of study to address this.

I’ve a developing list of available free and paid for study opportunities introductions, short course and longer commitments all outside the traditional bastion of higher education. This along with how to find a job that matters, especially in relation to climate change I’m mapping my journey and building into a resource for others, more on that later.

Notion.so how to, learn to use the app look at this Brain-trust set up in Airtable but embed in the excellent Work on Climate Notion resource. The brain trust is something I want to build for the emerging Irish Doughnut Economics Network.
I was looking at Airtable because it and Notion.so are featured in Nocodefounders and that is something that makes me curious, finding great digital tools that allows you to figure things and produce work… breadcrumbs and more plotting for sure.

Why Do We Dream? A New Theory on How It Protects Our Brains

What is resilience anyway? From the urban to the organisational, from the community to the individual, we need to understand resilience as a way of living with change.

Resilience as living change

Finally, understanding resilience as living change seeks to integrate epistemic humility as a way of navigating uncertainty. It puts forward listening instead of fixing; holding space instead of heroism; bearing witness instead of solutionism; radical remembering instead of toxic nostalgia.

I attended ‘The Power of Not Thinking: Book Launch‘ – leading business anthropologist Simon Roberts breaks down the revolutionary idea of embodied knowledge: the information that is unconsciously picked up by our body for use in almost every area of our lives.
Drawing on his own experience working with some of the world’s leading industry experts and looking at an incredible range of real-life examples and cutting-edge science, Roberts explains the various ways in which our body acquires, retains and employs information – and shows why we should learn to trust the instincts that inform the most crucial decisions and actions in our life.
In The Power of Not Thinking, Roberts shows why Big Data doesn’t have all the answers, why there are limits to what’s possible with AI and why humans are capable of far more than we are currently led to believe.
We just have to stop thinking and trust our bodies.
